Celtic Gathering Date: Sep 8, 2018 (camping and pre-show Sep 7)

Performance Schedule! (PDF)

On September 8th Sherwood Forest will open its faire-grounds for another free-admission Festival of world-class Celtic Music and Highland Games, complete with Celtic Clan booths, handmade goods for shopping, gourmet foods to feast on, and cold pints of ye favorite brews.

Camping will be available the night before and the night of the festival from 2pm Friday to 2pm Sunday, September 7th -9th. This year, in order to expand our musical lineup, we will be charging $10 per person for camping. That price includes both Friday and Saturday nights.

Our Celtic Music weekend kicks off Friday night at 8:00pm with Sherwood’s beloved FAIRE TO MIDDLIN performing at the Trip to Jerusalem Pub! Then the bad boys of Celtic Rock, BLACK IRISH TEXAS will hold a rare acoustic set from 9:00 pm until about midnight. The bar will be open late and the camping community of Sherwood Forest Faire will be in full force!

…And on Saturday, the music starts early and ends late at three different stages. This year as our new headliner, ED MILLER will be joining us. With his fine songs and his various radio shows, Ed has brought Celtic Music to Austin and the World Wide Web for decades. Join this Scottish musical showman at the Greenwoode Theatre and The Lionheart Tavern. We also welcome back CLEGHORN, the father-son Celtic duo who have been rockin’ all over the world. And, of course they will join BLAGGARDS who have held reign at this event every year since 2011 on the Greenwoode Theatre Stage. THE JIG IS UP! will also be returning with their powerhouse of traditional Irish musical maestros. And the SAN ANTONIO PIPES AND DRUMS will bring us the sounds of the Highlands throughout the day.

Also this September 8th The Lionheart Tavern Stage will again be sponsored by the NORTH TEXAS AND HOUSTON IRISH SCHOOL OF MUSIC. They will be featuring some amazing young Celtic Music prodigies, as well as Scottish Dancers. This year we are delighted to welcome MISTY POSEY, a powerful singer whose musical tastes are as wide as her musical range. Trained in classical singing and well-versed in everything from Disney songs to Opera, Misty has a passion for Celtic music and will share some amazing moments with you at the Lionheart Tavern. Also, SARAH COPUS, an award-winning billboard-charting harpist, returns to Sherwood Celtic Gathering after last year’s performances here AS A PIRATE! HARPS ACCORD returns as well: a pair of young harpers with a passion for traditional music and a knack for arranging popular songs of today with the mystic sound of the olde country… You’ll also find The SAN ANTONIO HIGHLAND DANCERS and the San Antonio Pipes and Drums at The Lionheart. So come give your eyes and ears a treat at King Richard’s Favorite Tavern and visit the CELTIC CLAN VILLAGE nearby for a wee bit o’ Celtic Culture.

Sherwood’s little Irish Pub at the bottom of the hill will be open all day, too. The Three Stags Pub will be haunted by two of Sherwood’s favorite bards. ANDREW MCKEE of Brobdingnagian Bards fame, as well as DAVID O’LEARY, who plays Robin Hood’s minstrel Alan A Dale at Sherwood Forest Faire, will be playing separately and together throughout the day. There you may also find our resident Scottish Bagpiper, JASON GUNN, who will play his Great Pipes outdoors and his small pipes indoors. Or you may catch him on the High Roads and Low Roads all through the forest. And… this just in, JAMES MAHLER, the prolific and delightful fiddler who played the Three Stags almost by himself last year will be joining the aforementioned Sherwood regulars to make the Three Stags a true destination for Celtic solos and session jams all day!

Our HIGHLAND GAMES will be sponsored again in the Highland Games Arena by our Athletic Director, AARON WOODS. Great Scots will compete for strength and Skill at games like the Caber Toss, Sheaf over the Bar, Hammer Throws, Weight Throws and more! There will also be quite a bit of ARCHERY going on, this being Robin Hood’s Forest. Our first Archery event will be at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday Morning in the Parking Lot outside the Front Gate. THE ANCIENT ART OF ARCHERY AND HORSEMANSHIP brings together bow and arrow – and horse and rider. KENT BATTENFIELD has been training as a horseman and an archer for over thirty years. He and his wife, JULIE BATTENFIELD will demonstrate the ancient art of mounted Archery on Saturday morning. Then in the early afternoon PAUL GOODNOUGH aka Robert de Bowyer, who hosts the Sherwood Royal Open Archery Tournament at Sherwood Forest Faire, will hold two rounds of contests with the finest marksmen… and markswomen in the land.

This early September weekend is almost upon us. Until then, put a Shamrock or a thistle in your calendar over the weekend of September 7th – 9th and plan on joining us for the Sherwood Forest Celtic Gathering and Highland Games of 2018!
